What is Data Privacy Day?

Every year on January 28th, the world observe Data Privacy Day a global initiative to raise awareness about the importance of data privacy and encourage individuals and organizations to take steps to safeguard their personal and sensitive information. In today’s digital world, protecting individual's privacy online is more important than ever. With so much of our lives conducted over the internet, from shopping and banking to communicating with loved ones, the need for strong privacy practices is clear.

Why is Data Privacy Day observed on 28th January?

World Privacy Day is celebrated on January 28th each year to honor the signing of the Convention 108 by the Council of Europe in 1981. This convention was the first legally binding international treaty aimed at protecting individuals' privacy and personal data.

What is Convention 108?

Convention 108, formally known as the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, is the first legally binding international treaty focused on protecting privacy and personal data. It was adopted by the Council of Europe in 1981 and is aimed at ensuring that the processing of personal data is carried out in a way that respects individuals' privacy rights.

What is Convention 108+?

Convention 108+ is the updated and modernized version of Convention 108 for the protection of personal data. It was adopted in 2018 by the Council of Europe to address the evolving challenges of data privacy in the digital age. Convention 108+, often referred to as the "modernized version" of the original Convention, aims to strengthen and enhance the protection of personal data, keeping up with new technological advancements and the growing global concerns over privacy.
